… the Library is total and that its shelves register all the possible combinations of the twenty-odd orthographical symbols… Everything… the translation of every book in all languages, the interpolations of every book in all books.Jorge Luis Borges: “The Library of Babel”
The basis for the conception of the exhibition is “The Library of Babel” by Jorge Luis Borges (which also plays a role in the Burgtheater’s program this year). In his narrative, Borges describes a library as an infinite collection of signs and ideas which the reader must discover for himself and put together in order to make sense of them.
In our library we have replaced the books with pictures and built a perplexing exhibition architecture of corridors and separated rooms. The works are encountered in their various exhibition locations, alone in niches, in conversation with other works, and in narrow or wider aisles. The narrative of Borges will become part of the exhibition in excerpts.
The young artist’s works are connected only by the fact that they study in the class of Professor Judith Eisler. Therefore, we do not want to impose a “red thread” on the exhibition. Rather, we understand this walk-in installation as an invitation to visitors to form their own library from the exhibited images and from Borges’ narrative voice.
