Painting At Scale

Artist Talk, Exkursion01. 06. 2026

Kaiserbründl

The two-day excursion was dedicated to applied forms of painting at the interface between architecture and public space. The focus was on commissioned works as a central source of income for artistic practice and their distinction from autonomous painting. Using concrete examples, the specific framework conditions of these works was discussed: spatial and functional specifications, legal and institutional requirements, and the expectations of clients, funding agencies and the public.

We talked to artists as well as people who organise, curate or finance art-in-architecture and similar projects. We followed the processes from open calls and the competition to the design and decision-making processes to the preparation and painting implementation on site. Students were given a practical insight into the professional production conditions of applied painting and an expanded, inspirational view on the medium.
